Papa Benedicto protege pedófilos acusados

Víctimas de los abusos sexuales cometidos por miembros de la iglesia católica dicen que el Papa Benedicto esta protegiendo a unos 19 obispos que han sido acusados de abusar de niños.

De los acusados, ningúno ha sido destituido, censurado ni referido a las autoridades.

Esto sale a luz en el mismo momento cuando el Papa dijo en su vuelo a los Estados Unidos que iba hacer todo lo que pueda para evitar que se repita el escandalo. "Excluiremos a pedófilos del sagrado ministerio" dijo este, de acuerdo a Reuters.

Even as he told reporters on his flight to America that he was "deeply ashamed" over the church sex abuse scandal, Pope Benedict was accused by victims of protecting some 19 bishops accused of sexually abusing children.

"As a Catholic, I have to sadly conclude that he is not serious about ridding the church of corrupt bishops," said Anne Doyle, co-director of BishopAccountability.org, a group tracking public records involving the bishops.

According to the group, of the 19 bishops "credibly accused of abusing children," none has lost his title, been publicly censured by the Vatican or referred for criminal prosecutions.

"The sexual corruption in the Catholic church starts at the very top," said Doyle.

Pope Benedict told reporters on his flight this morning from Rome to Washington, D.C., he would do everything possible to avoid a repeat of the scandal. "We will absolutely exclude pedophiles from the sacred ministry," he said, according to Reuters.

¡No solo los mormones, por supuesto!

Los mormones y la Iglesia Fundamentalista de Jesucristo de los Últimos Días no son los únicos que les gusta abusar.

"Mi padre me golpeaba y me dijo que tenía que casarme con ese hombre, y que si no lo hacia, iba a ser violada y ninguna ley ni sheikh en este país iba a ayudarme. Yo me rehusé pero no pude parar el matrimonio," le dijo Nojoud Nasser al periódico Yemen Times. "Yo pedí y supliqué a mi madre, padre y tía para que me ayudaran a divorciarme. Ellos contestaron, 'No podemos hacer nada. Si te quieres divorciar puedes ir a corte sola.' Asi que esto fue lo que hice", dijo Nojoud.

¡Y solo tiene 8 años! Esta historia me rompió el corazón pero a la misma vez me da esperanza saber que desde tan joven, el ser humano tiene la capacidad de revelarse encontrá del lavado de cerebro religioso y luchar por sus derechos como ser humano y en este caso como mujer. Esta niña fue sola a la corte a solicitar el divorcio y acusar a su padre. ¡Estoy boquiabierto!

¿Existe el libre albedrio? ¿Es la conciencia una ilusión?

La revista Wired nos habla sobre los interesantísimos experimentos que se estan llevando a cabo con maquinas MRI y fMRI. Científicos estudiando la toma de decisiones descubrieron que nuestro cerebro en ocasiones toma una decisión hasta 7 segundos antes que nosotros estemos conscientes de esto.

Para llevar a cabo el experimento, a los sujetos se les solicitaba que oprimieran un botón con la mano izquierda o la derecha y mientras hacian esto, se les observaba la actividad cerebral usando fMRI, MRI, etc.

"Tus decisiones son fuertemente preparadas por la actividad del cerebro. Cuando llega la hora de que la conciencia tome acción, la mayoría del trabajo ya se ha llevado a cabo," comenta John-Dylan Haynes, coautor del estudio.

Tomado por completo, los patrones predicen consistentemente cuando los sujetos del experimento van a empujar un botón con su mano derecha o izquierda - una decisión, que para los sujetos se siente como deliberación conciente. Para todos los que estan acostumbrados a pensar que tienen libre albedrío, las implicaciones son dificiles de tragar.

Para las personas es dificil aceptar, comenta el neurocientífico Mark Hallet, pues comenten el error de pensar que su personalidad es separada de su cerebro. "Es la misma noción de que la mente es separada del cuerpo - y yo no creo que nadie cree eso", dice Hallet. "Otra forma de pensar al respecto es que nuestra conciencia solo esta al tanto de algunas cosas que nuestro cerebro hace". Halled duda que el libre albedrío existe separado, como una fuerza independiente.

Solo estamos comenzando a estudiar nuestro cerebro, y yo espero que estos descubrimientos alumbren una luz en las áreas desconocidas de como pensamos y en que formas somos simples computadoras. You may think you decided to read this story -- but in fact, your brain made the decision long before you knew about it.

In a study published Sunday in Nature Neuroscience, researchers using brain scanners could predict people's decisions seven seconds before the test subjects were even aware of making them.

The decision studied -- whether to hit a button with one's left or right hand -- may not be representative of complicated choices that are more integrally tied to our sense of self-direction. Regardless, the findings raise profound questions about the nature of self and autonomy: How free is our will? Is conscious choice just an illusion?

"Your decisions are strongly prepared by brain activity. By the time consciousness kicks in, most of the work has already been done," said study co-author John-Dylan Haynes, a Max Planck Institute neuroscientist.

Haynes updated a classic experiment by the late Benjamin Libet, who showed that a brain region involved in coordinating motor activity fired a fraction of a second before test subjects chose to push a button. Later studies supported Libet's theory that subconscious activity preceded and determined conscious choice -- but none found such a vast gap between a decision and the experience of making it as Haynes' study has.

In the seven seconds before Haynes' test subjects chose to push a button, activity shifted in their frontopolar cortex, a brain region associated with high-level planning. Soon afterwards, activity moved to the parietal cortex, a region of sensory integration. Haynes' team monitored these shifting neural patterns using a functional MRI machine.

Taken together, the patterns consistently predicted whether test subjects eventually pushed a button with their left or right hand -- a choice that, to them, felt like the outcome of conscious deliberation. For those accustomed to thinking of themselves as having free will, the implications are far more unsettling than learning about the physiological basis of other brain functions.

Caveats remain, holding open the door for free will. For instance, the experiment may not reflect the mental dynamics of other, more complicated decisions.
"Real-life decisions -- am I going to buy this house or that one, take this job or that -- aren't decisions that we can implement very well in our brain scanners," said Haynes.

Also, the predictions were not completely accurate. Maybe free will enters at the last moment, allowing a person to override an unpalatable subconscious decision.
"We can't rule out that there's a free will that kicks in at this late point," said Haynes, who intends to study this phenomenon next. "But I don't think it's plausible."

That implausibility doesn't disturb Haynes.

"It's not like you're a machine. Your brain activity is the physiological substance in which your personality and wishes and desires operate," he said.
The unease people feel at the potential unreality of free will, said National Institutes of Health neuroscientist Mark Hallett, originates in a misconception of self as separate from the brain.

"That's the same notion as the mind being separate from the body -- and I don't think anyone really believes that," said Hallett. "A different way of thinking about it is that your consciousness is only aware of some of the things your brain is doing."

Hallett doubts that free will exists as a separate, independent force.
"If it is, we haven't put our finger on it," he said. "But we're happy to keep looking."

El Papa y yo tenemos algo en común

No quiero que piensen que todo lo que voy a poner aqui de la religión es negativo. Como muchos ateos, incluyendo a los mas vocales como Dawkins, Harris y Hitchens, creemos que la religión si tienen la capacidad de tener un fin positivo en la humanidad. Muchos creyentes utilizan este argumento en nuestra contra, sin darse cuenta que el hecho de que la religión haga el bien no es prueba de que Dios existe. Ahora, ¿el mal de la religión es superior al bien? Eso esta por verse, pero yo no creo.

La cosa es que hoy me topé con esta noticia respecto a la visita del Papa a los Estados Unidos. Aparentemente, hay una cena en la Casa Blanca, en honor al Papa, pero este no va a estar presente. Su itinerario no muestra ningún conflicto, por lo que lo único que podemos deducir es que este no quiere verle la cara al presidente mas bruto e incompetente en la historia de ese país.

Obligada a casarse con un hombre de 50 años cuando tenia solo 18

El siguiente enlace los lleva a un relato de una mujer que nació bajo el manto de la Iglesia Fundamentalista de los Santos de los Últimos Días, de la cual recientemente liberaron a 52 niñas. Esta iglesia se separó de los Mormones, quienes a su vez creen que Jesucristo vino a América y los indios son descendientes de Israel. La razón por la separación, fue que estos creian en la poligamia, y todavia la practican, manteniendo a la mujer en un estado de esclavitud y servitud al hombre que es común en todas las religiones y se puede leer en la biblia.

Es triste lo que mujeres y seres humanos tienen que vivir todavia por la religión. Esta mujer vivia como una esclava con un hombre mucho mayor, en un matrimonio escogido por el líder del culto. No podia ver a sus hijos ni abrazarlos y era castigada fuertemente por cuestionar los mandamientos de la comunidad.

Esta historia es un ejemplo claro de porque el biólogo evolucionario Richard Dawkins dice que inculcarle la religión a los niños debe ser considerado maltrato. Los niños en este culto eran obligados a casarse con hombres mayores a edades tan tempranas como 12 años. Nadie nace con una religión. Todos nacemos ateos, y la religión se nos introduce por boca y naríz por los adultos. ¿Tienen los niños una opción de escoger? ¡Claro que no! Los niños confian en que sus padres quieren lo mejor para ellos, y no es hasta muy tarde que entienden que sus padres no lo saben todo y cometen errores. La religión deberia ser una opción para todos. Debemos dejar a los niños criarse en un ambiente secular, y que cuando sean adultos, con la capacidad suficiente, elijan la religión que quieran, incluyendo la opción "Ninguna de las anteriores"!

Muerta por 9 días

La familia de una anciana de 85 años, quien se habia muerto, mantuvo el cuerpo de esta por una semana en su apartamento pudriendose, mientras estos oraban por su resurreción.

Dumbfounded by the news of a family's desperate att-empt to raise their loved one from the dead, religious leaders on Grand Bahama yesterday spoke out on the story that has most of the island stunned.

Sometime on Friday it was reported by police that the family of an 85-year-old woman, who had died, had kept her rotting body in an apartment in Bahama Reef for more than a week, praying for her to return to life.

Grand Bahama Christian Council (GBCC) President Sobig Kemp said in a telephone interview that al-though he admired the family's strong belief in the power of prayer, he cannot help but believe that they misinterpreted the Word of God.

Kemp's second in command, GBCC Vice President Bishop Arnold Pinder, shared similar sentiments on the matter, saying that the family's judgment had been clouded by their blind faith.

Kemp said he was shocked upon hearing of the tragic story.

"Basically I was very surprised that something like that could happen in our community. We live in a society that is well versed in God's laws and the principles of God and so it sounded to me like I might have been in a foreign country where there are a whole lot of cults and other activities that happen," Kemp said. "In our society, we have a full understanding of the revealed will of God and as Bahamians I would never think that we would hear something of that nature."

Kemp said that persons must understand the plan and purpose of God.

"God allows some people to live while he allows others to die," he said. "What I think happened is that the persons were subconsciously grieving and in denial. One of the stages in grieving is denial and it's quite possible that that may have pretty much set in, resulting in them not wanting to release their loved one."

The pastor said that it is understandable that the family would want to do all that they could to ensure that their loved ones are with them for as long as possible, but it is unrealistic to think that they could actually raise someone from the dead.

"Just because we want our loved ones to live on, doesn't mean that God is going to favour one family over so many others who felt the same way. I think it's really presumptuous," he said.

Meanwhile, Bishop Pinder said he believes "there's a lesson to be learned in that because in a lot of ways what we need is teaching. I think that those people sincerely believed that they could bring their loved one back," he said.

"But I also believed that they did not use wisdom because after they realized that the first few rounds of prayer wasn't working, they should have turned the body over to the authorities."

While commending for their display of faith, he can-not help but "to question their belief and what their take is on religion," adding that he would like to personally speak with members of the family to find out the meaning behind their act-ions.

Central Detective Unit officers on Grand Bahama are still investigating the bizarre circumstances surrounding the matter. No charges have been filed in this incident.

According to reports at about 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 4, CDU and Lucayan Division officers proceeded to Falston Apartments, situated on Indiana Lane, to investigate reports of a foul odour emanating from Apt #6.

They were met by a 56-year-old male, who informed them that his mother, Florence Ophelia Russell, who occupied that apart-ment, had been suffering from diabetes and died nine days earlier on March 27.

He further stated that the family got together and decided that instead of calling the police or EMS personnel, they would commence a fasting and prayer vigil, in hopes that God would restore their mother back to life.

He stated that after nine days of continuous prayers, without any result, they decided to call the police.

Officers examined the badly decomposed body of Russell, which was lying in bed, clad in sleep wear, but found no signs of any violence.

While this matter is being dealt with as a sudden death, police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem, before making an official classification.
